Kaka Shehu
Lawan, a former justice commissioner a attorney-general of Borno State,
has called for the arrest and prosecution of a former governor of the
state, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff over his role in the “growth” of Boko
Haram.
Lawan made this call at the annual
conference of the Nigerian Bar Association, in Port Harcourt, Rivers
State on Tuesday, August 23, 2016.
He accused the embattled politician of
being guilty of creating an enabling environment for Boko Haram to grow
and become the most deadly terrorist group in the world.
Boko Haram began a campaign of terror
against the Nigerian state in 2009 mounting attacks on innocent
civilians, children, and women across the country, but especially in the
North East region. The group has killed over 30,000 people, kidnapped
thousands and continues to terrorise the country.
The terrorists say they seek to establish an Islamic State where it would be governed by a medieval version of Sharia law.Ali Modu Sheriff, the immediate past chairman of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP was the governor of Borno State when Boko Haram grew and became a powerful political movement. He has been accused of being the founder and sometimes, sponsor, of the terrorist group.
He has always denied the allegations.
