The Nigerian Police Council (NPC) has confirmed the appointment of Mr Ibrahim Kpotum Idris as the substantive Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The council confirmed the appointment yesterday at a meeting held at the Aso Rock Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting took place shortly after a meeting of the Council of State presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
Buhari had on June 21 appointed Idris as Acting IGP following the retirement of Solomon Arase.
Addressing State House correspondents after the meeting, Jigawa State Governor, Abubakar Badaru, said there was almost a unanimous acceptance of Idris’ appointment by the police council. The governor said the council eventually resolved to confirm the appointment.
“We deliberated on the confirmation of the Inspector General of Police, IGP. There was almost unanimous acceptance of his confirmation. So, the police council do resolve to confirm the Acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris,” Badaru said.
The governor said most of the comments received by the police council had proven Idris to be a man of impeccable character, adding that the council expected him to conduct himself as such.
“We believe he (IG) is very honest and transparent. We also believe he will continue to be honest and do his best for the country,” Badaru said.
Lagos State Governor Akinwumi Ambode stressed that the IGP would be presented to the Senate for his appointment’s confirmation.
“It is important to recall that beyond the police council resolution today (Wednesday), he (IGP) has to be presented to the Senate, specifically for confirmation,” Ambode said.
