Governor Wike Blasts SaharaReporters Over ‘Fabricated, False, Basless’ Report

By

Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers State, has described as “fabricated”, “false”, and “baseless” latest allegations that he offered bribes to Supreme Court justices in order to procure a favorable verdict, in the governorship election matter that was decided by the apex court earlier in the year.

The state’s commissioner of information, Austin Tam-George, has said in a statement that the governor condemned the All Progressives Congress, APC, and its media surrogates for perpetuating “a tiresome and unsubstantiated propaganda”.
The statement, issued on Wednesday, October 12, 2016 warned media practitioners and politicians of the consequences of making defamatory statements.
“Even the seemingly ungoverned territory of online publication cannot escape justice, if  it is used to spread falsehood and to defame,” Dr. Tam-George said in reference to recent allegations of bribery against the governor published by SaharaReporters, an online tabloid.
Wike made headlines over the weekend when he intervened in the attempt by the country’s secret police, the Department of State Security Services, DSS, to abduct Justice Liman, a federal judge from his home in Port Harcourt soon after midnight on Saturday, October 8, 2016.
The Rivers governor was manhandled and injured by armed agents of the DSS. The security operatives, who were hooded, also pointed their gun at Wike and threatened to shoot him.
The botched operation was part of a national crackdown on federal judges and Supreme Court justices by Muhammadu Buhari presidency. A move, carried out under the guise of an “anti-corruption fight”, has been roundly condemned by Nigerians.
