Still searching for Orji’s body… Inset is the body earlier found
LASEMA urges fishermen, others to report floating body It is three days since the nation was jolted by Dr. Allwell Orji’s suicide by jumping into the lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge; and the twists and turns to the story have been unnerving.
Yesterday morning, news filtered out that a seeming closure to the incident was in the offing with the discovery of the deceased’s body but it was an anticlimax at the Awolowo Way, Ikoyi office of the Marine Police, when the victim’s mother said the recovered body was not her son’s.
Orji, had on Sunday evening ordered his driver to park his car, a Nissan Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with registration number LND476EE at the Adekunle axis of the Third Mainland Bridge before jumping into the lagoon.

Detectives attached to the marine unit of Lagos Police Command had around 11a.m. yesterday fished out the body of a young man from the water.News of the recovered body had gone viral on social media, forcing the mother of the deceased and some family members to storm the Ikoyi office of the marine police to identify their son’s body. However, the story took a new dimension, few minutes after the mother sighted the body and declared that the recovered body was not her son’s.The Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, had earlier confirmed that the body of the doctor had been recovered. He said the Marine Police at the Onikan end of the lagoon recovered the body.
The rejection by the doctor’s mother have forced rescue workers to continue combing the Lagos lagoon in search of the missing body of Orji.Mrs. Orji had earlier expressed optimism that her son would be recovered alive. She had expressed optimism during her conversation with sympathizers that her son would return home alive.
The spokesperson, Zone 2 Police Command, SP Dolapo Badmos, said: “Orji’s mother has come to identify the recovered body, but she said the deceased was not her son. The family members looked at the body and confirmed it was not the body of Dr. Orji; the clothes on the recovered corpse did not tally with what Orji wore on the day of the incident.
“The rescuers who called off the search after the body was recovered have resumed. Hopefully, before the end of the day we would fish out the body of the doctor,” she said.
The Lagos State Emergency and Management Agency (LASEMA) on Tuesday urged fishermen and other Nigerians that ply the Lagos waterways to immediately report any floating body to the Marine police.
The General Manager of LASEMA, Tiamiyu Adesina, made the call in Lagos, as search for the body of Orji continues. He noted that the police would handle investigation that will lead to the identity of the recovered body, but added that anyone with information about a body on the waterways could also call the Emergency Toll Free Number 767 or 112.
