PDP Extends Makarfi Tenure Till 2017, Convention To Hold In 12 Months

By

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has extended by one year the tenure of the party’s caretaker committee led by Ahmed Makarfi, a former governor of Kaduna State.

Nigeria’s leading opposition party, has rescheduled its national convention. The party says it will resolve lingering lawsuits within this period.
The announcement was made Wednesday, August 17, 2016 at the party’s secretariat in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, by the convention planning committee chairman and governor of Rivers, Mr. Nyesom Wike.
The decision followed the inability of the party to hold its repeat national convention in the Rivers State capital after a Federal High Court on Abuja stopped the convention.
Police and soldiers on Wednesday morning sealed off Sharks Stadium, venue of the planned convention and barricaded the Old Presidential Lodge, where party leaders like Governor Ayodele Fayose were lodging, preventing the party chieftains from attending the down-scaled convention.
The National Executive Committee, NEC, later met at the Rivers State Government House and decided to postpone the election of new set of leaders for the party.
