Boko Haram bombers on rampage detonated several explosive devices in multiple blasts early Wednesday in Damaturu, Yobe State capital, killing a university undergraduate and 17 others.
In what appeared like desperation to hit at soft targets, a suspected Boko Haram bomber reportedly threw explosive devices at a sparsely crowded Fulani settlement located at the outskirts of the capital in the early hours of today, leading to the death of some people in the area and causing panic among residents.
Residents said the second and third blasts occurred at Mohammadu Buhari Estate in the capital at about 6am when two suicide bombers arrived the area in a tricycle. Both bombers were said to have disembarked and headed to their targets-mainly a commercial hub of the estate. A young man, an undergraduate of Yobe State University, Damaturu who first suspected the unusual movement of one of the bombers, “attempted to apprehend him and in the process, exploded,” killing the undergraduate and some other residents nearby, father of the deceased undergraduate, Mohammed Damagun told journalists in Damaturu.
Executive Secretary, Yobe State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Alhaji Musa Jidawa earlier confirmed 16 people died and 10 injured from the explosions, adding that those injured have been taken to the State Specialists Hospital in the capital, for treatment.
However, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Toyin Gbadegesin while confirming the incident, said the death toll has shot up to 18. He said two of the critically injured victims brought in to the hospital later died while 12 were injured. He said bodies of the deceased have been deposited in the mortuary for families and relations to claim the corpses. He also said those injured were receiving treatment at the Sani Abatcha Specialists Hospital.
Hundreds of families and relations of the deceased and victims besieged the state specialists hospital yesterday morning in search of the remains of their loved ones who were victims of the multiple blasts, two medical personnel at the hospital told Daily Sun on condition of anonymity.
Damaturu has experienced relative peace since August when a bomb explosion perpetrated by a female suicide killed at least six people at the gate of the main Motor Park, located at the heart of the capital.
