Search engine giant, Google Nigeria, National Film and Videos Censors
Board and Home Vida, has called on the government, organised private
sector and the civil societies to put policies on ground that would
improve safety of users while on the web.
They made this known at an interactive session in Lagos to commemorate
Safer Internet Day, with the theme: ‘Play your part for a better
internet’.
According to Google’s Policy and Government Manager, Titi Akinsami, a
safer internet would benefit everyone who uses the web, hence the need
to evolve the online safety landscape.
She called on key stakeholders to employ smarter tools that will ensure the online environment remains safer for use.
In his speech, the Chief Executive Officer of Home Vida, Seember
Nyager, explained that the aim of the Safer Internet Day was to educate
teenagers and other age groups of the society on how to make proper use
of the internet for their own benefit.
According to him, despite the fact that the internet was the fastest
way of accessing informations, its hazardous effects were also
prominent, hence the importance of the Safer Internet Day set aside to
address it.
Also, the representative of the National Film and Video Censors Board,
Mr. Terry Odey, said the general safety will also involve censorship of
movies, which the board has been doing judiciously.
He said unapproved movies that find their ways into the market poses
threat to the audience. “Our work primarily is to discourage indecent
movies, hence we don’t allow them. Our films are classified for
different audience, we have for teenagers, children and adults. So most
of those films you see, they either didn’t pass through us or they pass
through us and after we have done our work, they add somethings to the
movie behind us,” he said.
The institutions, on ensuring Safer Internet, are collaborating to
train over 10,000 Nigerian students via the web Rangers, face-to-face
training sessions and via the newly launched online portal at
www.saferinternet.org.ng
