ICAN Pledges to Assist Auditor-General’s Office on Forensic Audits

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), has offered to assist the Office of the Auditor General of the Federation (OAUGF) in forensic auditing, which the federal government currently expends huge funds engaging consultants to execute.

The ICAN President, Chief Femi Deru, who offered the institute’s hand of fellowship during a visit to the Auditor General of the Federation, Mr. Samuel Ukura, in Abuja, Wednesday, also challenged auditors to always upgrade their knowledge with globally acceptable auditing standards to guarantee better practices.

“What we take away from this visit is that accounting is the world business, and auditing is key in checking it to ensure it is robust and meets acceptable global standards..We are here to ensure that those auditing our public institutions are knowledgeable enough and comply with standards set out by International Federation of Accountancy. A workshop is currently ongoing to that effect to ensure we maintain standards,” Deru said.

He expressed the need to ensure that auditors work accordingly to ensure global compliance, adding that “we are already working towards that to ensure compliance by relevant bodies that handle government auditing business.”

In his remarks, Ukura, disclosed the federal government spends enormous funds on consultants to caeey out auditing jobs.

Ukura stated that his office had facilitated the training of auditors on performance auditing, and environmental auditing, which translate to efficiency in handling government auditing business.

“When we had the issue of flooding, an environmental auditing was also conducted, which assisted us in having audited reports to confront such challenges in the near future. We have also focused on disaster management audit to ensure proper auditing.
