Environment, Mr. Babatunde Adejare Thursday read riot acts to Cain
weavers under Ojota Bridge to operate with a sense of responsibilities
all will relocate their business from the area.
Adajare gave the charge Thursday while Fielding questions from journalists on the early morning rain on Wednesday that flooded Ojota bridge and some part of Ikorodu road.
The visibly angry commissioner alleged that the cain weaver had earlier blocked the drain where the water from the bridge was to discharged into the main collector right under the bridge with concrete leaving the bridge and the road flooded.
“I will be going to Ojota right after this briefing, this is the second time this is happening, the last rain too also flooded the bridge and when we investigated the situation, it was discovered that drain where the water was to discharged had been blocked cement because they said water was destroying were they are working.
“Are they supposed to be there in the first instance, I am going to take them out of that place this evening? We will repair it and I assure you that it will not happen on that bridge again.
“ I grew up to meet cain weavers under the bridge but if they are not going to be responsible because their fathers that started the business have all gone, we will have no choice but ask them to leave.
Adajare, said the government is not relenting in its effort to clear the drains so as to avoid flooding at the peak of rainfall in the state.
“It is responsibility of the local government to clean primary drains in the state, but then the state government is not leaving it out to them alone we are clearing and desilting drains constantly so as to prevent flood.
“ We have 222 big channels to line them the budget of the state cannot do it in one year, we all need to come out and collectively work towards keeping our drains clean,” he said.
He appealed to residents to desist from the act of pouring refuse in the draining adding that the government has fulfill all payments to private operators of waste disposal to enable them carry out their job.
On the activities of the ministry in the last one year, the commissioner informed that the ministry is working on plan with public private partnership to establish public toilets across various locations in the state to help curb open defecation.
He also informed that plans are on for a new water policy to help boost water supply in the state.
Adajare said the government will also employ more sanitary inspectors and has given approval to purchase equipment to fumigate the state.
