Fani-Kayode Meets Bail Conditions, Released From Kuje Prison (PHOTOS)

Femi Fani-Kayode, a former aviation minister and chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, has been released from Kuje Prison on Monday, November 14, 2016, after meeting the conditions for his bail.

Chief Fani-Kayode was granted bail last week by a federal high court hearing the case brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

He is regaining freedom after spending 24 days in the detention of the EFCC and Kuje Prisons. Most of those days were spent in the EFCC detention facility. He was moved to Kuje Prisons on November 10 after he was formally charged to court.

Chief Fani-Kayode was held in contravention of the Nigerian constitution that stipulates that detainees should be charged to court or released from detention within 48 hours. His prolonged detention has been labelled a political witch-hunt by the opposition party and political activists.

While at the EFCC, he received a number of high profile visitors. The first was by prominent Roman Catholic Bishop, Matthew Kukah on Monday, October 31, 2016.

Other dignitaries who visited him were, Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Dr. Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy senate president, a former aviation minister, Jerry Useni, the leadership of the PDP, and leaders of the Middle Belt Forum.

 

 

 

 

 

Sources at Kuje Prisons told our reporter that Fani-Kayode was kept in the same cell as Boko Haram suspects. The source who didn’t wish to be named because he is not authorised to speak on the matter revealed that the order to place him in the “terrorism cell” came “from above” and the aim was to “break” the outspoken critic of the Buhari government.

Fani-Kayode was not available for comment at the time. A message to his phone asking for confirmation has not been replied.

“Chief Femi Fani-Kayode has been released,” Jude Ndukwe, a spokesperson to Fani-Kayode e-mailed to The Trent. “He gives thanks to God for everything and he has asked me to convey his heartfelt appreciation and love to all those that prayed for and encouraged him and his family at this difficult time and indeed throughout this ordeal.”

“He will now focus on getting the medical attention that he needs. He wishes to let all those that have offered him support and that have stood by him throughout this period know that his resolve to help build a better Nigeria and stand up for righteousness and truth remains strong.

“No matter what comes our way we trust the Lord and we believe that we shall prevail,” the email ended.
