8gb lpddr4 dram packageWe’ve finally reached the age where mobile devices pack even more power than some desktop computers. 6GB RAM mobile devices are no longer new, something bigger is about the hit the market. Samsung has announced its new 8GB LPDDR4 (Low Power Double Data Rate 4) memory chip for mobile devices.

Although there’s no device in the market using this new memory chip right now, it’s only a matter of time before 8GB RAM on smartphones and tablets flood the high-end mobile market. Joo Sun Choi, executive vice president of Memory Sales and Marketing at Samsung Electronics said:
The advent of our powerful 8GB mobile DRAM solution will enable more capable next-generation, flagship mobile devices around the world. We will continue to provide advanced memory solutions offering the highest values and leading-edge benefits to meet the escalating needs of devices having dual camera, 4K UHD and VR features.
It was only a few days ago when Samsung announced it’s capability to mass produce SoCs based on the more efficient 10nm FinFET technology. This means smaller chips and the Korean giant is employing the same method to produce this new 8GB LPDDR4 RAM. The standard 4GB RAM on most devices today are produced using the 20nm process, this implies that the upcoming 8GB RAM chip will even be smaller than any other RAM chip already in the market.
With Qualcomm’s upcoming SoC Snapdragon 830 to be manufactured by Samsung using this process, these components are expected to be seen on mobile devices in the first quarter of 2017.
