Hillary Clinton actually got more votes than Donald Trump.
She claimed a slim majority of the overall votes cast by Americans.
As at the time of filing this report, she polled a
total of 60,274,974 votes as against the 59,937,338 votes recorded by
Donald Trump. Only 20 electoral votes is still available.
However Trump won the presidency because of the Electoral College system, recording an astonishing 290 to Hilary's 228.
It's a fascinating turn of events for Trump, who
four years ago tweeted, "The electoral college is a disaster for a
democracy," following Mitt Romney's loss in 2012.
According to the US's National Archives and Records
Administration, the Electoral College is a process established in the
Constitution as a compromise between election of the President by a vote
in Congress and election of the President by a popular vote of
qualified citizens.
The Electoral College process consists of the
selection of the electors, the meeting of the electors where they vote
for President and Vice President, and the counting of the electoral
votes by Congress.
The Electoral College consists of 538 electors. A
majority of 270 electoral votes is required to elect the President.
State’s entitled allotment of electors equals the number of members in
its Congressional delegation: one for each member in the House of
Representatives plus two for Senators.
Hillary is the fifth presidential candidate in the
history of USA to finish ahead of her rival in the popular vote but lose
the election.
The others were: Al Gore, who lost to George W Bush
in 2000 by five electoral votes even though he won the popular vote;
Grover Cleveland, who lost to Benjamin Harrison in 1888; Samuel Tilden,
who lost to Rutherford B. Hayes in 1876 and Andrew Jackson, who lost to
John Quincy Adams in 1824.
