Ghana’s Main Opposition Party Leads In Early Poll Results

Results from Wednesday’s general election in Ghana have begun trickling, with early signs that the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has momentum in numerous parts of the country. A SaharaReporters crew monitoring the election from Accra, the capital of Ghana, reported that the NPP, led by Nana Addo Dankwa, is leading, according to provisional poll results from at least 60 percent of polling units across the country and the official results declared in parliamentary competitions.

The results also indicated that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), whose presidential is incumbent President John Mahama, has lost ground in most of Greater Accra area.
SaharaReporters wishes to underline that the vote tallies are provisional and still unofficial. However, the atmosphere in Accra, where NPP officials addressed a late night press conference, was electric, with supporters of the opposition party in a celebratory mood.
Ghana has 29,000 polling units, and more than 20,000 polling units have so far unofficially reported numbers from the election.
