There was tension over the weekend as rumours circulated that President Muhammadu Buhari died at a London hospital where he was said to be receiving treatment.
The rumours gained ground after a news website published a story that the President was dead.
The rumour soon spread like wild fire in different parts of the country with many Nigerians making frantic phone calls to ascertain the story’s accuracy.
The presidency however said on Sunday that there was no truth in the news.
Garba Shehu, senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, said nothing unpleasant happened to the president.
Shehu said this on yesterday while reacting to speculations on social media that Buhari had died
He described the speculations as “baseless rumour”, urging Nigerians to disregard them.
“Baseless rumors are trending again that an unpleasant thing has happened to our beloved president, Muhammadu Buhari,” he tweeted.
“If you have received this information on WhatsApp or Facebook, disregard it because it is plain lies spread by vested interests to create panic
“Nothing unpleasant has happened to the president. No cause for apprehension. Thanks for the many calls.”
