There is a silent symptom of cancer that you should never joke with as it could be potentially life threatening. This very common symptom could point to cancer – so make sure you know what to look out for.
If you are constantly bloated, this could be the first warning sign of cancer.
This is what happened to Sherie Hagger who thought her persistent bloating was a sign of inflammatory bowel disease.
The Australian woman said she was in “so much pain” and would suffer from diarrhea within an hour of eating or drinking.
Sherie was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease at 15 – which causes the
lining of the digestive system to become inflamed – so she put the pain
and bloating down to this.
But it was much more severe. Sherie struggled through the pain for three months before she went to her doctor, who diagnosed her with bowel cancer.
To treat the disease the 31-year-old went through several major
surgeries, five weeks of radiotherapy and six months of chemotherapy.
This was two and a half years ago. Recently doctors found a new
tumour in Sherie’s bowel and she is now undergoing her second round of
treatment.
She told news.com.au: “Don’t be embarrassed to talk about it.
"The more we talk, the less there is to be embarrassed about. So don’t be a fool and test your stool.”
Sherie hopes her story will encourage younger people to go to their doctor if something isn’t right.
Other symptoms of bowel cancer include pain in the lower abdomen, finding blood in stool and a change in bowel habits.
If you are constantly bloated or are facing any of these symptoms, make an appointment with your GP immediately.
