Borno State Health Commissioner, Dr. Haruna Mshelia on Thursday, said
that at least 248 primary health care facilities have been destroyed by
Boko Haram.
The commissioner also said the insurgents destroyed 19 General
Hospitals and killed a lot of health workers, while many others had fled
the state.
Haruna said since people were yet to return to most of the local
governments, the ministry had no specific number of health workers
killed and those who left the state.
He said prior to the Boko Haram insurgency, the ministry had embarked
on capital project of rehabilitating and refurbishing 135 primary
health care facilities in the state.
He said, “The General Hospitals rehabilitated and refurbished before
the crises are in Guzamala, Dikwa, Rann, Chibok, Uba, Biu, Biryel,
Askira, Kwaya Kusar, Mafa, Marte, Shani, Marama, Monguno, Damboa, Ngala,
Benishiekh and Konduga.”
The Commissioner added that despite the situation, the state can boost of 156 medical doctors, among who 24 were house officers.
He said with that team on ground, the ministry was able to check the
prevailing threats of malaria with the distribution of over 2.5 million
mosquito nets, as well as administering of drugs against malaria to
about 880,905 children.
