Susan Bro, the mother to 32-year-old Heather Heyer who was killed during the Charlottesville protest, gave a powerful speech on Wednesday at her memorial service in Charlottesville's Paramount Theater.
Speaking to a crowd of mourners who wore purple because it was Heather favourite colour, Susan said, "They tried to kill my child to shut her up. Well, guess what? You just magnified her,"

She pointed to a Facebook message that Heyer posted in November and said;
"I want you to pay attention, find what's wrong ... and say to yourself, what can I do to make a difference?" Bro said. "And that's how you're going to make my child's death worthwhile.
"I'd rather have my child, but by golly, if I've got to give her up, we're going to make it count."
Also speaking at the service, her father, Mark Heyer, choked up as he spoke of his daughter. "She wanted equality, and in this issue of the day of her passing, she wanted to put down hate. And for my part, we just need to stop all this stuff and just forgive each other. I think that's what the Lord would want us to do."
Police arrested James Alex Fields Jr., 20, of Ohio, who pulled his car into white supremacist counter protesters, killing Heather and injuring 19 others. He was arrested that afternoon after they found the damaged Challenger. He is being held without bail and faces one count of second-degree murder, three counts of malicious wounding and one count of failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death.
