Wikipedia, the self-acclaimed world’s largest repository of knowledge, recently put out two promotional video adverts featuring veteran Nollywood actor Pete Edochie and kid comedian Emmanuella in a bid to increase its usage.
The videos are compelling in that they see Wikipedia selling its service, yet giving voice to African creatives to tell and reimagine their own stories. We particularly loved Things Come Together, which stars Edochie as Chinua Achebe’s iconic character, Okonkwo.
The advert title is a pun on Achebe’s Things Fall Apart, and appears to bring the fabled characters to life in the present. In an adult education class, their teacher throws questions on religion and history at his students and only one man (Ezeudu, played by Chief Nduka Eya in the original and this commercial) answers all the questions.
“Multitheism? That’s another big grammar used to describe our ability to afford many gods. But you see, the people you represent are too poor; they can have only one god. Whereas, us here, we can have as many gods as we want. That is multitheism.”
Later on, the “exceptionally intelligent” Ezeudu, shares the secret to his vast knowledge with Okonkwo, pulling Wikipedia and the modern world seamlessly into Achebe’s universe. It’s a strange and powerful powerful fiction that makes for one of the most unusual commercials we’ve seen in a while.
Social media audiences, who love Edochie for his infamous quotes in Nollywood movies were disappointed that he didn’t end with one of those infamous quotes. A small letdown though, for the pleasure of seeing the old lion reprise one of his most famous roles in so powerful a manner.
