The woman was sharing an Uber ride with two friends in New York when she slipped her hand into the driver’s tip jar to steal cash. What she didn't know was that she was being recorded.
The driver realized his money had been taken only after the passengers had alighted. He then sounds his horn in a bid to get the group's attention but doesn't get a response. The driver, who has now been identified as Mohammed H. Bhuiyan, said he told Uber what had happened and they recommended he take the matter to police.
The identity of the woman has now been revealed to be 18-year-old Gabrielle Canales. Uber has now banned her from using the app.
A spokesman said yesterday they had been back in touch with Mr Bhuiyan to offer more support.
"What’s been shown has no place on our app and the rider’s access to the app has been removed," an Uber spokesman told DailyMail.
Gabrielle's Instagram account has since been deleted and she has also been banned from using the Uber app.
Gabrielle later went on Instagram to gloat about it. She claimed she "only" took five dollars from the jar. She also claimed she later returned the money to him.
