Solar-powered 'paper' that could charge your phone in 2hrs

Phone batteries rarely last a full day anymore, so carrying compact chargers is becoming the norm. And in Nigeria where electric power supply is still erratic, carrying compact chargers or power banks has not solved smartphone battery problem, even as they are heavy, clunky and not convenient.

But a Chicago-based firm has now designed a super-thin, lightweight panel called Solar Paper capable of charging an iPhone in two hours and multiple panels can be combined to boost its power.
The firm, Yolk, has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund production of the gadget.

The solar paper charger comes in four versions - 2.5W, 5W, 7.5W and 10W - depending on the output needed for various devices.

The firm said a 5 Watt charger costs $148 (N54,000).

And the different sizes are created by combining individual 2.5W panels together.

For example, a single 2.5W panel will charge an iPhone 6 or Galaxy S3 in five hours.

The 5W version charges the same devices but cuts charging time to two hours hours, or three hours when the weather is cloudy.

York had raised more than $1 million on Kickstarter and is now globally available to buy.

Each solar panels has holes punched in the corners, meaning users can hang it to a backpack if they want to take it on outdoor adventures.

While the 10W version is ideal for tablets, such as the iPad Air 2, and will charge a device in 4.5 hours.

These panels connect using magnets and can be folded together.

Each individual panel measures 3.5 inches x 6.7 inches x 0.6 inches (9cm x 17cm x 1.5cm), weighs 60g and is 1.5mm thick.

Other features include a unique auto reset function which stops and starts the Paper charging when cast with a shadow or placed in sunlight - other solar-powered devices need to be reconnected each time.

It also has a low-energy LCD screen that displays the amount of power the Solar Paper generates in real time.

‘’We have the world’s top technology making highly efficient solar panels,’’ explained Yolk.

‘‘It is programmed to automatically reset when it has enough sunlight [and] with this auto-reset feature, it generates power more in an efficient and stable way.’’
