Okorocha, Orji Kalu intensify lobby for Senate Majority Leader seatAs the 9th Senate reconvenes early next month, after its first break, two APC senators from the South East geo political zone have commenced high power lobby to take the Senate Majority Leader position, which the ruling APC may have reserved for the South East as compensation for leaving the zone out in the sharing of the NASS leadership positions
The AUTHORITY gathered reliably that former governors, Rocha’s Okorocha and Orji, Uzor- Kalu, are currently locked in a battle to occupy the less fancied seat at the red chambers
Orji, a former governor of Abia state had surprisingly withdrawn from his much talked about race for the senate deputy president, after a caucus meeting with President Muhmadu Buhari and believes that the APC should appreciate his loyalty and respect of its leaders choice of Senator Omo – Agege with the majority leader position
But The AUTHORITY gathered that former Imo state governor, Rocha’s Okorocha, who had finally received his witheldCertificate of Return after a legal battle with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and was eventually sworn in at the red chambers has thrown his weight into the ring for the seat
This is even as two South East groups under the umbrella of South East Presidential Support Committee and South East Equity Alliance have called on the leadership of APC and Federal Government to give the zone a sense of belonging in the country by ceding the positions of Senate Majority Leader and Secretary to Government of the Federation (SGF), to the South East.
The equity group insisted that Okorocha’s has remained the face pf APC in the zone, adding that his contribution to the success of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the zone, has positioned him well for the seat
Speaking at a joint press conference addressed by Engr. Chambalen Adiaso, Comrade Maxwell Okoye and Dr Vitalis Orikaeze Ajumbe in Abuja, the group which also congratulated President Buhari on his recent victory at the polls urged him to use the victory in consolidating on the socio-economic progress commenced in his first term.
“Nigeria is a great country with six geopolitical zones and in the interest of equity and equal representation, ee demand as a right, that the position of Senate Majority Leader be ceded to the South East.
“We have consulted widely with all critical stakeholders from within and ouside the South East zone, and there are overwhelming support for Senatoe Anayo Rochas Okorocha to immediately declare his interest to occupy the position of thr Majority Leader of the 9th Senate.
“Senator Anayo Rochas Okorocha was the only APC governor in the South East, and a founding member of the APC merger.
“As a result, we call on the APC to rekindle the spirit of reward and rally round Senator Okorocha in this journey to reintegrate the people of the South East into the mainstream politics of the APC”.
Speaking further, Ajumbe maintained that ceding the office of Senate leader to the South East would not be enough to give the zone a sense of belonging to one Nigeria, adding that the federal government can be gracious enough the bridge the gap and return to equity by picking somebody from the South East as Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), since according to him, “the South East has regrettably remained the only zone that has been ignored and not carried in the current distribution of political offices in the country
